NOW… thanks to QLab? All I need is my MacBook Pro. And if we were in a particularly cramped booth (aren't they all?) it was even more unwieldy. It worked, I got by with it … but it was not an elegant solution. And I would be cueing the lighting operator at the same time, typically sitting next to me.

Since this was my first foray into theater (my primary field of expertise is music for film and TV), I was using my MacBook Pro and a portable sub-mixer (for added control) to run the sound cues via iTunes with my other hand I was pushing the pause button on a DVD player. I am the production coordinator and sound designer for my wife's Pulitzer Prize-nominated solo show "Now That She's Gone," which we've been doing theatrically for the last 3 years all over the world. QLab is truly one of those "how did I ever get along without it" items.

Just one final thing next time you go to the theatre have a look what software the sound engineer is using, if they have a mac it will have Qlab on it! The free version is great for amateur groups for simple audio playback. The software is expensive, but is aimed at professionals and does much more than cheeper alternatives. However they now have some great tutorials on the website, I would suggest watching these before you start using the software as it covers the basics well. For example cross fading tracks into each other. The only negative is some of the more simple commands can take a while to get your head around. The software not only plays back the sound file, but also sends midi commands to the desk to raise the fader and lower the fader when the sound has stopped playing. The free version is great! I used this for ages but finally upgraded to the pro version just because I wanted to use the midi integration. I have used this for our amateur theatre group for the last 3 years and it works flawlessly.

Fade cues will now update their audio effects properly if their target is changed.

An exception that could occur when deleting Light Patch items.Performance improvements for Light cues.Fix crash reporting on macOS 12 (Monterey). This change does not make QLab less safe, only more compatible with the way some audio effects handle security. QLab is now more compatible with audio effects that don’t use certain macOS security policies. As with other text editors, you can press theĮscape key to move focus out of the text editor and restore the ability to move to the next and previous inspector tabs with these commands.

Command-left-arrow and Command-right-arrow will now carry their traditional meaning of jumping to the beginning or end of a line in the AppleScript text editor and the light command text editor. When viewing the Light Patch, there is a new menu option for "Patch" → "Select All Instruments".cd 11.14.1.5 takes you to the same place as cd ShowData.DataPools."Default".Sequences (note I only placed double quotes around Default since it's a keyword and required and for some clarity, but in practice you should place quotes around all path names. from there you can list that folder and traverse yourself down the path of numbers that I used.Īdditionally you can stack the numbers or names together by separating them with a dot. With that first number you can type either cd 11 or cd "ShowData" and now you are in the show data directory. Here you can see the in the No Column you can see 11 and with the name of ShowData I found them by digging around.įor example, on the Command line if you type List you get back something like this.

No it's not in the manual yet, They say because things are still changing and they could break in future versions, additionally they suggest to use the names and not the numbers since the numbers can change, however in a case like this I'm not sure you can use the path names.
